Company Results

  • Carpetright have reported a decrease of 2.9% in UK like-for-like sales for the 25 weeks to 22 October 16. (Source: Reuters)
  • Debenhams have reported a 0.7% increase (constant currency) in group like-for-like sales for the 53 weeks to 03 September 2016. Profit before tax increased by 0.5% to £114.1m for the same period.
  • Inchcape Group have reported a 15.3% increase in group revenue (constant currency) to £2.0bn for the three months to 30 September 2016. UK like-for-like sales increased by 14.6% for the same period.
  • Pendragon have reported a 5.7% increase in like-for-like revenue for the three months to 30 September 2016. Like-for-like profit before tax increased by 6.3% for the same period. (Source: AM Online)
  • Selfridges have reported a 5.0% increase in sales to £1.4bn for the year to 30 January 2016. Operating profit stood at £152.0m for the same period. (Source: Retail Week)


  • Sytner group have reported a 15.5% increase in sales to £4.2bn for the year to 31 December 2015. Profit before tax stood at £94.2m for the same period. (Source: AM Online)

While not as strong a result as the preceding two weeks, lifestyle retailers had its fifth successive week of positive results with LFL sales up by +1.7%. Gift retailers and home accessories enjoyed another upbeat week while stationery and outdoor goods stores dampened overall results with a decline in sales.

After two weeks of positive results, fashion LFLs once again fell into negative figures with sales down -1.2%, mirroring the results from this week last year (-1.6%). While some of the upscale and bespoke fashion retailers enjoyed moderate boosts, this was offset by declining sales amongst mid-range fashion retailers and across the peer group. More than half of the group reported negative LFL sales which is not surprising as national High Street footfall was flat year-on-year.

Homewares celebrated another week of buoyant results with LFL sales up +10.8%. This is particularly strong coming off of a negative base of -4.8% this time last year. Department stores and home accessories boasted double digit increases in sales with more moderate increases for the rest of the peer group.

For the second consecutive week, non-store LFL sales did not break the +20% threshold with sales up +14.1% despite double digit positive results across Homewares, Fashion and Lifestyle retailers. Online fashion saw the largest increase in LFL sales (+14.35%).

Clothing, Footwear & Accessories

  • Tesco have announced a three month trial of a paperless till system that sends proof of purchase to the customer’s smartphone at their store in Harlow, Essex. (Source: Guardian)

  • Beast, a new male beauty retailer, have announced plans to launch their debut store at London’s Seven Dials. (Source: Retail Bulletin)


  • Homebase have announced that Laura Ashley concessions have been pulled from their stores, following the Homebase’s acquisition by Wesfarmers. (Source: Retail Week)
  • John Lewis have appointed Paula Nickolds as their new Managing Director with effect from 01 January 2017. The retailer has also announced that Mark Lewis has stepped down as Retail Director with immediate effect. (Source: Guardian)
