Company Results

Beales have reported a 0.6% decrease in total group sales including concessions and VAT for the 19 weeks to 13 September 2014. Like-for-like sales including concessions and VAT increased by 1.7% for the same period.

Booker have reported a 0.1% increase in total sales for the 12 weeks to 12 September 2014. Like-for-like sales excluding Makro increased by 1.8% while like-for-like sales excluding tobacco increased by 3.1% for the same period. (Source: The Grocer)
House of Fraser have reported a 4.2% increase in like-for-like sales for the half year to 26 July 2014. Online sales increased by 29% for the same period. (Source: The Telegraph)
John Lewis have reported a 2.0% increase in sales for the week to 20 September 2014. Electricals & Home Technology and Home sales increased by 8.3% and 6.6% respectively while Fashion sales decreased by 6.9%. Sales at johnlewis.com increased by 12.7%.

Lakeland have reported a 5.7% increase in turnover to £166m for the year to 31 December 2013. In-store sales increased by 4.9% while home shopping sales increased by 4.6%. Operating profits fell from £6.18m to £3.01m for the same period. (Source: Retail Week)
Moss Bros have reported a 4.6% increase in total sales to £55.8m for the 26 weeks to 26 July 2014. Like-for-like sales increased by 6.4% while e-commerce sales increased by 100% for the same period. Pre-tax profit decreased by 9.1% to £2.0m.
Waitrose have reported a 7.6% increase in sales (including petrol) for the week to 20 September 2014.

A largely negative week for the lifestyles sector with the majority of contributors down year-on-year. Small ticket gifting and jewellery appeared relatively strong, though growth was far from exceptional.

Unseasonal weather continued to plague the fortunes of fashion retailers this week. Many of the more specialist retailers actually demonstrated some reasonable growth but the more mainstream retailers found growth very hard to come by.

Homewares remained robust this week with the weather having little effect on the sector. Big ticket furniture sold particularly well this week.

Non-store had another very poor week with sales well below expectations. In line with the high street, homewares retailers far outperformed those operating in the fashion and lifestyles sectors.

Phones 4U are to sell 58 stores to EE for £2.5m, after they entered into administration, safeguarding 359 jobs. The retailer have also agreed to sell 140 stores to Vodafone in a separate deal. (Source: BBC)

The latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel, for the 12 weeks to 14 September 2014 show that overall grocery market growth has slowed to a new record low of 0.3%, as price inflation falls to zero. Aldi has continued its run of double-digit growth by recording a sales increase of 29.1% compared with last year. Similarly, Lidl has increased sales by 17.7%, showcasing that shoppers still have a strong appetite for the discount stores. On the other hand, Waitrose’ sales have grown at a faster rate than previous months, up by 4.5%, which has brought its market share back up to 5.1%.
