Company Results

Carpetright have reported a 2.2% decrease in group sales to £447.7m for the 52 weeks to 26 April 2014. UK total sales decreased by 1.5% to £375.8m while UK like-for-like sales decreased by 0.2% for the same period.
Carphone Warehouse Group have reported a 5.3% increase in group like-for-like revenue for the year to 29 March 2014. Pre-tax profit increased to £133m from £125m for the same period.
Dixons have reported a 3% increase in total underlying group sales to £7.2bn for the year to 30 April 2014. UK & Ireland sales increased by 3% to £4.1bn while like-for-like sales increased by 5% for the same period. Group underlying pre-tax profit increased by 76% to £166.2m.
Pentland have reported a 10% increase in sales to £1.9bn for the year to December 2013. Profits increased by 36% to £85m for the same period. (Source: Verdict)

House of Fraser have reported a 2% increase in like-for-like sales for the quarter to 26 April 2014. Online sales increased by 20.2% for the same period. (Source: Retail Week)
John Lewis have reported a 16.7% decrease in sales for the week to 21 June 2014. Fashion, Electricals & Home Technology and Home sales decreased by 16.0%, 12.7% and 22.0% respectively. Sales at johnlewis.com decreased by 6.4%. Sunny weather and a later start to clearance was the blame attributed to the decline. (Source: Drapers)
Shoe Zone have reported a 16.1% decrease in sales to £82.9m for the six months to 05 April 2014. Pre-tax profit was reported at £2.7m for the same period. (Source: Retail Bulletin)
Waitrose have reported a 1.9% increase in sales (including petrol) for the week to 21 June 2014.

The lifestyle sector struggled this week with the majority of contributors failing to find growth. There were pockets of good performance but nothing widespread enough to qualify as a trend.

Fashion struggled for the most part with mainstream retailers demonstrating the largest falls. Those retailers who only launched their sales this week proved to be the strongest performers whilst those who failed to hold their nerve with regards to discounting lost some momentum this week.

Homewares demonstrated the greatest dip this week with department stores in particular struggling. Big ticket furniture sold well whilst interior products fell fairly flat.

Non-store sales underwhelmed this week with results that can be considered largely in line with the high street. Consumers appeared more interested in enjoying the sun than spending their time indoors shopping.

Debenhams have plans to open Sports Direct concessions within their department stores as they attempt to reverse a decline in profits. The concessions will open in Debenhams’ stores in Harrow and Southsea in August 2014, followed by further branches before the end of 2014. (Source: The Telegraph)

The latest Asda Income Tracker has revealed that the average UK household had £171 a week of discretionary income in May 2014, up by £4 a week on May 2013. This latest increase is the eighth consecutive month that families have seen their discretionary incomes rise year-on-year.

Electrical & Entertainment

– The proposed merger between Carphone Warehouse and Dixons has been unconditionally cleared by the European Commission following its phase I review.

Lidl have unveiled a £220m UK expansion drive as they invest in new shops. The retailer have plans to open 20 new stores in next nine months, taking their store count in the UK to 620 and creating 2,500 new jobs. (Source: Retail Week)

Sainsbury’s have entered into a joint venture with Netto, the Danish discount grocery chain, with an investment of £12.5m each. The joint venture will see the launch of 15 Netto stores by the end of 2015 and the first store will open in the north of England by winter 2014. (Source: BBC)
