Against strong comparisons (+8.5%) non-fashion marginally increased, with luxury and gifting popular. In other areas demand was slightly down, with leisure and entertainment the weakest performers. Fashion remained below the line drifting down for the sixth week out of the last seven. The miserable unseasonably cold weather, plus modest levels of discounting and promotions, provided little incentive for consumers to update their summer wardrobes. Homewares continued to move ahead, underpinned by strong sales of furniture and lighting, offsetting weaker general demand trends. Sales made through non-store channels were slightly below average with clothing purchases weak.
